A Very Eggcentric Kitchen

Welcome to my kitchen.
It is truly egg-centric. This summer, we've been getting 3 dozen eggs a day. And my husband has been selling them for $1/dozen!

This room isn't static. We're always cooking, making huge messes. This is where we sort mail, stash the groceries, and gather at parties.

Sometimes I get into a minimalist state of mind and sweep through the room, emptying the counters. The granite is assertive, and it doesn't put up with messy people.

And then I'll cook something complicated and make a humongous mess, and the whole cycle repeats.

I will confess to being something of a neat freak--way deep in my heart. This is not to say that I'm not capable of dirtying up the joint. No, I can turn the place upside-down in a flash. That said, when my mother visits, she puts her medicine bag (a crinkly Wal-Mart bag) on the counter and defies me to move it. She likes to keep a watering glass beside the sink. She told one of my friends, "I LOVE to throw a monkey wrench into Miss Neat Freak."

On the other hand, if the kitchen is wrecked, she makes tsking sounds and rolls up her sleeves, muttering about sloth.lol
Mother is coming here tomorrow. :-)

A glimpse into the pantry.

  1. Beautiful kitchen Gollum! I have a good friend who has a large kitchen open to a great room/breakfast room combination in Texas. When we were picking colors for her house, I urged her to paint the ceiling a vibrant color. We chose a rusty orange color (similar to the dining room color in your house) and I have to tell you - IT IS SPECTACULAR! The kitchen ceiling is a bit lower than the ceiling in the great room and the breakfast room had a vault, so only the kitchen ceiling was painted. We chose a good mix of accessories, and some amazing furniture pieces carrying the rust color - and afterall, it's only paint right? I can totally see this in your kitchen - especially since you've moved the rust colored curtains into the hearth room. What do you think? Too much? I'll have to pull through my portfolio to see if I took pictures. You just have to see this!

  2. OOooo, please tell me that's a rhinestone cactus on your mothers shirt! HOW CUTE! Can I borrow her?

  3. Oh, and pineapple upside down cake is my absolute favorite. I would guess that more than 20 people have made it for me in my lifetime, and no one has ever put pecans on it. I bet that would be absolutely amazing, as pecan pie is my second fave. mmmm, I may have to bake tomorrow!

  4. this is a fantastic kitchen! I love every little detail you have added...(but then I already told you that on RMS) I too am a neat freak and sometimes it can add a little complication to life with a family, dog and every little thing we do...enjoy your visit from your mom!

  5. You have an amazing kitchen! Wow! If I had a kitchen like that, I would probably actually cook! Ok, let's be real, I would dream of just sitting in there while someone else cooks! lol

I love your mother! I am the same way, wanting to messy up an otherwise perfect place. I'm that kind of person that is driven crazy by any place too neat! I have to throw a magazine down or kick off my socks in a messy pile on the floor to feel comfortable.

  8. Your mother is an absolute cutie! I hope you have a lovely visit.
I like Artie's idea for painting your kitchen ceiling. I think it would be stunning. I hope he can find that picture for you.
I think that Artie will not be the only one whipping up one of those pineapple upside down cakes. It looks awfully good.

    Cheers, Bridget

  10. Your kitchen is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing a picture of your mom and a the little stories you told about her. I am one of those neat freaks too and I can remember this cheezy pink hobo bag my mom use to carry and she did the same thing - placed it on the kitchen counter when she came over and just gave me that look that said "don't even think about moving my bag". After my mom passed away I brought her pink hobo bag home with me placed it on my counter and left it there for weeks. Funny how the strangest things give you comfort during a time of loss - anyway, your mom sounds like she has a little spunk - enjoy every minute of it.
Have a great weekend one and all. :)

  12. Mother knows best! I love peeking into this interaction you have with your mother.
Your kitchen is not only gorgeous but a kitchen with function. Now that's an ideal kitchen to me.
Is that where you create the gollum columns for us?

  13. BTW while I'm enjoying a slice of that delicous looking pineapple upside cake I'll take 3 dozen eggs to go please.

  14. Gollum.

Your kitchen is great, but what else could we expect from you. :)

What time are you serving the cake? Or maybe we can do a cake exchange, I just made a Pumpkin Cream Cheese Roll (new recipe I wanted my son to try) and a 'must make' for my son, Banana Cake (his favorite). Guess I'll have to learn to take pictures too.

Enjoy your cake, as I'm sure you do, that wonderful kitchen.

    HELLO TO YOUR MOM.......

  17. Morning girl...you have an absolute 'jaw dropping' kitchen..oh my word..and how wonderful to have your mama come and visit...I still envy you having real chickens...I couldn't eat the eggs (for some reason mine has to come in the little carton from the grocery store! lol) but I do love chickens..ohhhh just to watch one big ole fat mama hen walking around with her little 'dodies' and hear her softly cuckling to them...oh good grief..making myself cry! Name one of those pretty chickens "Picket" and talk to her everyday for me! lol Have a great weekend friend!

  18. Now who wouldn't enjoy cooking in such a spectacular kitchen!

Your Mother and I may be kindrid spirits when it comes to carrying
a plastic bag. It seems like every time I go to my daughters, I always have some sort of bag in tow.

  20. Oh such a big SIGH looking at your kitchen! I'm so glad you told us who didn't know, that you could click on each picture to make it larger...now I've done that to each one since! lol
I love the way you word things~~"the granite is assertive"! :-) Design does "speak" doesn't it?!
I am also a neat freak. I used to have a co-worker come in my classroom just to move things around on my desk (as a joke when I wasn't there). I must have things perfectly "squared" on my desk! She didn't know that it was a thrill to me just to have something to straighten up again~Ha!
Your mother is beautiful and so nice for all of us to see such a "homey" pic with her cooking!
I'll be looking at these pictures many times with more heavy-hearted sighs!!!! :-)

  21. You've still got one of the most beautiful, well put-together kitchens I've ever seen. Everything about it speaks to me. That granite is just GORGEOUS and so different than the usual black stuff everyone else seems to have. And that stovetop! Oy!
Loved the pic of your mom at the stove. Look at the bod on that woman!

  22. Hi Gollum, Love your Mom! She knows just how to push all your buttons, doesn't she. :-) Your kitchen is gorgeous! I'm into pantries...would love to see more of yours. I've been dreaming for sometime, of a pantry like the one Bunny Williams has in her home in the book "An Affair with a House". Thanks for sharing your great kitchen and your wonderful Mom with us...now we know where you get your sense of humor! :-)
Susan P.S. I have that "neat-freak" gene, too. I have often been accused of putting dishes in the dishwasher that someone was still in the midst of using. :-)

  23. Morning Gollum, It goes without saying that your kitchen is beautiful! I could have so much fun helping you make a mess in here. What I can't get beyond is your mother! She is just the cutest thing ever and I'll bet she can cook up a storm in your "playground". I sure would love for you to share your Pineapple upside down recipe. I'm a wicked cook, but I don't bake much. However, my mouth is watering for a slice of that cake and my boys would be so impressed if I would present them with an actual CAKE..... Have fun with your Mama! I'll bet is a bundle of energy! (((hugs))), Carol

I am such a neat freak, that walmart bag would make me crazy! So I guess what I am saying is you are right and everyone else is wrong..lol Loved todays post, as always. vickydarnell

I would love to go shopping for accessories in your kitchen. Not that I'd have any place to put them all. Yours is huge. Thanks for sharing your kitchen. I love kitchens!

I've always wanted a huge one but alas, I don't think we will ever move from our home. We want our girls to grow up here. Maybe one day we will just expand.

I thought I'd drop in on you before I went out of town. Your kitchen is gorgeous and I swear I remember it from RMS. The detail on the cabinets is oustanding.

Your mom is beautiful and very well dressed. Very smart looking in the blouse and slacks. Sounds like she likes to tease you too ;)

Will you please pack up a piece of the upside down cake for my roadtrip? :)

I know you are from RMS too (I'm seeing lots of you around now!). I will have to go back & see your older posts. I love to look at pretty houses.

Nikki told me how to do those photos in Photobucket..it's such a neat special effect. Love it.

  39. I have been purusing this kitchen for so long, I almost forgot to leave a comment. I have always loved every inch of this kitchen, but that rooster on the range hood is so fantastic! It's an elegant rooster-not too obvious-just right. And your mother is a doll. I'm sure when she comes to visit, she feels such pride in you to see all of your creative ideas. Yesterday's blog had me looking around my house for new ways to use old things. That's something I love doing, but haven't done in awhile. You are such an inspiration. Thank you. 40. My Father in particular loves to leave little piles of stuff around. My Mom has a runner on the DR table to cover some of them! He has a home office yet loves to use the kitchen cabinets to file many things! This may explain why I usually have a stack of books on one of my kitchen table chairs..hmmm;)! Your Mom has a sassy look about her- I bet she is fun!! Your kitchen is beautiful- great cook top! I too am wondering what china pattern is in your cabinet. I am a nut for dishes esp. transferware. Artie's idea for your ceiling sounds like it would be beautiful. Christy

  46. Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!! I didn't realize that the 'eggcentric" kitchen was YOURS!!! I ahve been IN LOVE with this kitchen forever!!! Loved seeing the picture of your Mom, she seems to be a combo of my late Mother and my late Mother-in-law! My Mom was the messy one and Joe's Mom ALWAYS had a water glass next to the sink which made me NUTS:):) Thanks for this wonderful post.....and the CAKE!!! Fondly, Pinky:)from RMS

  48. Hello Gollum - I've been "lurking" at your blog for quite some time and enjoying it so much. Your kitchen is lovely and since I am at the beginning of a kitchen remodel I would love to ask a couple of questions! I'm looking at sinks. One for the laundry room, one main kitchen sink, and one secondary sink at the island. I have Kohler cast iron sinks in "almond" for all 3 existing sinks...can you say 1984? I was planning on replacing them with Kohler undermount sinks in basic white. I see you have stainless steel sinks in your kitchen area...do you like them better than the cast iron and if so why? Also my kitchen designer is pushing to put in a larger sink at the island than is there now. Would you mind telling me the dimensions of your sinks? Thanks, Sheila from west Michigan

  55. Your kitchen is just gorgeous!
My kitchen is about a third of the size and I am used to cooking for 6-8 darlings at every meal and it always has some clutter somewhere.
My dream for a bigger home is because you can spread stuff out a bit more so it doesn't all look so messy. ha ha!

  56. I WANT THIS KITCHEN!!!!! I have been looking at ideas as our tiny kitchen that makes no sense in a not so tiny house desperately needs to become a focal point. My husband can't understand why I freak out with dishes in/near the sink....could it be because my kitchen is IN THE LIVING ROOM! It's an open concept great room and kitchen which is great when friends come to stay...the guys cook and we watch chick flicks.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Michael Lee, I had to smile about the water glass by the kitchen sink. My husband insist on keeping one glass out for the day. Like we don't run the dish washer anyway? And why do we have all those glasses in the cabinet? LOL
Love the pantry! It would be my dream to have a walk in pantry like this or a butler's pantry.
Hope all is well with you and your family.
    Sarah
