My mother bought a box at a garage sale. I think she paid $15.00 for it, and she thought it was WAAAYY overpriced--the box was intact, but all messed up, paint-wise.
She brought it to me (she loves to buy for friends and family--rarely buys for herself).
I really loved the box, and I displayed it in the living room, warts and all. But I kept thinking what I could do. At first, I wondered if I could cover it with shells; but it's so intricate, I hated to.
I have great faith in paint as an Accessory and Furniture Transformer. That said, I am the Princess of Giveittomenow. I have no patience to wait until I have all of the proper materials. I use whatever is handy. Today I decided to revamp the box. Digging in the pantry, I found a can of flat black paint, faux gold paint, and a brush.
[Postscript: Just so you won't think I am a crazed paint hoarder--which I am, actually--I didn't just "happen" to have paint and brushes lying around. The black paint had been bought en masse to spot-fix peely-places on our black fence; the gold paint had been bought to paint the black legs on a coffee table that is the less beautiful twin of Vicky Darnell's, and I briefly posted the table back in March 2008, but took down the post; and the paint brush had been bought by Honey to Min-wax/seal an outside table that my brother repaired. There was no saving that gold-dipped brush, but I do have a stash of brushes for Honey. Not only that...I have a dirty, little hoard of spray paint, glaze, and metallic paint...but that could be the subject of a blog about hoarding.]
Since I love to spray paint outside in copperhead snake territory, that's exactly what I did. In this heat, the paint seemed to dry between heartbeats.
Ooops. I got a little heavy handed with the lid
You know you are addicted to blogging when you are painting with one hand and snapping a picture with the other. It's TRUE, isn't it, fellow bloggers?!
So I decided to respray the lid and use a lighter hand with the gold.
I'd thought black would work because in this room, I have tried to spread around black accents
And I have a "box" thing going on in the room...
[In another part of the room, there are more boxes--I took inexpensive boxes, faux painted them like mad, and grouped them in a bookcase, but that's another blog entry).
Well, it looks better, but...now I'm having Painter's Regret. Oh, maybe I should have excavated the garage for that can of Almond spray paint! No, no, stop it, gollum. The box has been through enough today.
What do you think? \
Before
After

Do you have any stories about the transforming power of spray paint? If you have before/after pictures you'd like to share, let me know and I would love to post them.
Hi! Found your blog through Artie's and I love it! I, too, am addicted to spray paint. My most recent project: a three piece wicker set. I think the box is just perfect the way it is! Jealous!
ReplyDeleteI have shelves and shelves of spray paint! I love it! I could make three weeks of blog posts on all the things I have changed to suit my mood! lol....Your box is fantastic...They don't make yard sale items like here!
ReplyDeleteMy next mission is to fix up that old wicker loveseat that I rescued from the back of my neighbors truck today! I have had my eye on it for a year now...and they were finally hauling it away....and now it is MINE>>>all MINE! if I can't make it safe to sit on...I will cut holes in it and use it as a Potting Bench...get it? two holes for two pots? a little spray paint and I am cookin with gas!...
girl I love your blog. You have done so much good for us all....thanks. As you know...I will be away for about a week. May be able to stop for a quick visit...but not sure. Until I get back...take care all! And thanks to all for the support! You don't know how much it has meant or helped!
by the way...did you get your spray painting bum out there and feed your roses today? go now gollum,,don't make me come over there!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I just answered the million dollar question, because I now know who you are! I am so excited because the talent that you have is so inspiring! I won't tell anyone but I feel like shouting from the rooftops "I know who Gollum is!!!!" Now I am going back to RMS and view your rooms again!
ReplyDeleteLaura :)
Gollum,
ReplyDeleteI recognize several things in these pics! I've stayed up many nights "Gollum hunting"! This is very exciting! I know we're supposed to be talking about spray paint...but now I have to go search and find some of these things in your spaces!:-) And your box looks beautiful~~very elegant!!
Tomarie
Gollum,
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the blog posts about Karen's house? Well - in one of my posts you can see how I changed her sconces in the bedroom which are original to the 1905 structure with almond colored rustoleum! Love the stuff! Because I couldn't take the sconces off of the wall, the taping and papering was a pain, but the end result is really nice (IMHO). Great blog again today, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way the box turned out!
Most definitely the after is fabulous. Your mom is quite the treasure finder! And you made me laugh with the "copperhead territory" comment. Have a great night..errrr. morning...sheesh this blogging thing has me so discombobulated I have no clue what time it is. That must mean it's BEDTIME!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love spray paint.. I love the second box ... it is so rich and makes such a statement.. Thanks to your momma for such a wonderful treasure..by chance are you having a box fetish going on..lol..I'll have to think about some of the transformations I've made with spray paint and share those with you.. trust me there are "several". As always you are such an inspiration...hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeletegollum, I love the box! I spray painted two roosters white that were very colorful. One was a lamp, and I love them! They are in my sunroom.I'm not very crafty, and have no patience, so when I recently bought a couple topiaries the pots looked like gray concrete. I was going to paint them red, my favorite color, and my DH took them from me and painted them himself! He knew I'd ruin them! LOL! Connie
ReplyDeleteGollum, I spray painted my coffe table in my family room. I loved the new look. Pictures are on rms. Love J
ReplyDelete***You had better STOP "teasing" us, and show us MORE of your intriguing spaces, GG!!! ~~~ a lil' bit o' house here, a lil' bit o' fabric there, etc., is just "whetting" the taste buds even MORE now ~~~ and I can't STAND it!!!!!! Now "yours truly" is trying to marry up your undoubtedly mahhhhvelous spaces with those seen "before" on RMS... your style is so classically beautiful that it SHOULD be easy, but it's not! (Nowadays, because of Rate My Space's TV show, one has to sift thru sooo much *%&^#* to even FIND the FABS, but we KNOW they are there... somewhere!!!). I L-O-V-E and so ENJOY this delightfully crazy group of "GOLLUM GIRLS" that meets here (and guys, too! Sorry!)~~~ annnnnd, well, YOU are just sooooooo SPECIAL!!! Gosh it's sooooo good to have you back "home" again!!! Hugs, Linda
ReplyDelete"OOPS!" ~ Meant to compliment you on yet ANOTHER fab blog here tonight ~~~ it was such a delight to read, but then again, EVERYTHING you WRITE i-s a "SPECIAL TREAT" in one's day!!! THANK YOU for providing these joyful times! Linda
ReplyDeleteYou little tease you! I can't wait to see the other boxes you've painted! You mom is the best to be getting you little treasures and helping with the decorating. Your "after" is great and I love the lamps you've got in the photos here. You have a chair fetish and mine in lamps.
ReplyDeleteYes, you have been bitten by the blog bug to be painting and snapping photos at the same time. I've started carrying a camera in my handbag just in case! lol
Hey Gollum, Love the box your mum found, we know where you get your exquisite taste and eye for a great bargain from now. More of your wonderful home today, I have to admit that I have spent an awful lot of time in your guest room but never did the whole tour. Well I put that to rights tonight and could kick myself that I missed those stunning spaces.
ReplyDeleteYour mothers gift is precious and looks beautiful by your lamp and urn.
Now I have a bench and two bistro chairs to spray paint and I keep looking at them, I have the paint, but am scared to death to do it!!!!. night Gollum, Kathy.
I'm not big on painting but my Mom was the Queen. Remember when antiquing was popular? maybe not, it was back in the late 60's. My Mom covered everything in the house with this new fangled method. She never owned a new stick of furniture herself, but she could breath new life into a handmedown. Damn, I miss her.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Gollum,
ReplyDeleteSpray paint....is my middle name. ;)
I have boxes filled with cans of spray paint, mostly a brand called Design Master. When I had my boutique, I did a lot of silk bridal flowers, I would order mostly white, from my supplier and then spray paint them the color, of choice, desired by the bride. This allowed me to shade each flower giving it a more natural look. In fact, I am going over to the church garage today, to make new arrangement, for the alter, for the month of August.
I have some white roses that I'll be spraying, while there, for a new arrangement for my living room, I'll take before and after pictures and put them on my blog later today.
Love the box and getting a peek at parts of your rooms. As always, a great post.

Kudos to your mother for finding such a beautiful box. You've transformed the box to make it look current and it compliments your other accessories. Bravo, I love it!
ReplyDeleteMom/Linda always states just what I'm thinking "your style is so classically beautiful that it SHOULD be easy, but it's not!" This is so true. I love the lamps (big suprise there lol) but the way you placed books under the clock gave it that extra punch making it a knockout.
Gorgeous accessories and one super fantastic blog. You've certainly knocked it out of the ballpark once again. Thank you gollum.
Oh My!!! Do you have any idea how many times I've been to your spaces?! Just last week I had an accessoring question so I went straight to one of your spaces to look at a photo that I knew held the answer. Thank you by the way! :-) You are soooo talented!
ReplyDeleteThe box is great. I love doing little transformations like that too.
Hugs,
Penny
Your box is beauiful, I have a thing for boxes as well, they add lifts and are so useful for keeping things in. I am also a person who uses what she has when the mood hits. I think we were cut from the same fabric. Thanks for sharing. vickydarnell
ReplyDeleteWOW! but it canNOT be true that you are impatient. not with all the lovely things in your home. i always feel that i have somehow "cheated" by not using the so-called proper equipment for the task, BUT the project is DONE and the satisfaction is better than waiting for the right stuff to appear... i sprayed a lamp flat black. it was white and green with gold trim and a cameo-ish of josephine [think napoleon] on one side (why would i have had reservations about painting it?)now it is chic and i have the requisite black accessory in my room. i'm part of the gollum-spray-it-now club!! jkj
ReplyDeleteI too am a great lover of paint- be it spray or brush on. I've painted many light fixtures, so often you can find the style you want but not the finish. The best was when I was switching all the door knobs to black metal so instead of replacing all the hinges I painted them with craft paint made for painting metal- cost under $10 !!! Also painted the ugly fake marble tile surround on my fireplace, still looks great after 7 years! Oh yes I loves me some paint ;)!! Christy
ReplyDeleteI got the "paint bug" last weekend and found a small can of copper glaze .. I have a pale green floor lamp that I love but it needed a little punching up so I rubbed the glaze on it and now it's perfect! Gollum, there is no way to describe (though I know you hear it daily) how much we all look forward to your very informative and entertaining daily musings. I don't know who you are and the mystery of it is intriguing. (livebold/RMS)
ReplyDeleteI love the box, I love it either way. Your mom sounds so special and I can tell you love her very much and she loves you back very much. I went to visit you on RMS but you're gone. Did you delete your spaces or did I mispell the name? (sometimes I miss a letter or 2 b/c it's a long one word). I will definitely miss them if you deleted...Christine
ReplyDeleteGollum< I love spray p[aint, and I have a lot . I do madallions for 2 lighting co. and also change the chandys finish on some. Gotta have my spray paint. Some finishes require 6 diffrent colors added. Thr fun is figureing out the right colors. Love the box. Kathy
ReplyDeleteI'm having to restrain myself from spray painting two resin bird figurines! Christine, I didn't delete anything on RMS...not this time, anyway. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI feel so left out! I went crazy last night going over RMS looking for your rooms.I feel I too know you,but I am missing something here. It doesn't matter,I still love you.
ReplyDeleteNow on the spray paint fetish...I have an 20 year old iron bakers rack(the good quality kind) it changes color every few years. And then there is my 7 shelf iron etagerie that I spray when I change up the pretties .Years ago I stocked up on my fav colors because some nut told me they were pulling spray paint from the shelves. You should see my craft paint collection. I pride myself on being able to match and repair anything.
Your box is beautiful.Thank you for sharing your stories...
The box turned out great! I have been inspired by the women here in blogland and on RMS to try some spraypainting myself, and completed a project on an old ugly chair I was given, and it turned out even better than I expected! I'll give you the link here:

By the way, loved the transormations of the two busts with the white paint and seashells for their hair! They looked so much happier!
Kady
OMG.....it's gollum, and as beautiful as her column! I rarely come back at night to read the comments but I'm so glad I did. It's sooo nice to "see" you. :-D
ReplyDeleteI'm still clueless as to your RMS spaces but I'm enjoying what you are posting here anyway.
:-D
p.s. Your dog is adorable.
Dearest F.I. If you are still trying to maintain any sort of anonymity, you may want to change the file name on your profile picture...although, I think just about everyone has figured out who you are by now.
ReplyDeletep.s. with an RMS screen name like you have, I had quite a different image of you. lol
May I have your permission to use your photo in an RMS related post on my blog?
Well you KNOW what I'm gonna say..."Rub n Buff"! lol! Yes, I think you should go back over it with a little bit of the gold to even it out but it does look pretty!
ReplyDeleteHey pretty lady!
ReplyDeleteThank you for adding the picture! Which little baby is this one?
You mentioned being a writer, but not what you write. Can you share?
Diane
I'm currently working on a project that invloves 3 cans of spray paint and one chair, I can't give too much away or you'll probably guess what I'm up to, LOL.....will post before & after pics after it's done tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteHello, I was referred to your blog by a few of your friends at RMS. Im pretty new at this and having somewhat of a hard time finding my way around. So, please excuse me if Im in the wrong place. I loved your utube story of the lion. I still have goose bumps and I couldn't by pass your spray painted box and article without making a comment. First: Your box turned out beautifully. Second: I sooo identify with all you had to say as I am also a compulsive spray painter. Nice to know there are a few of us. I could probably come up with a few pictures. BTW Nice to meet you. ~Athella
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love that box and what you did to it! Tell your mom it was worth every penny!
ReplyDeleteJustine :o )
I hate to think what I paid for a box that looks a lot like that. Great job!!!
